The Refuel Roadtrip is back! We've been to Detroit, Flint and now we're headed out of state to the windy city. That's right .. we're going to CHICAGO!

We've designed all our pit stops to be hands-on and connected to Black and Latinx people and culture. See, hear and experience ..

  • nationally respected intervention, prevention and development programs
  • community development successes
  • cultural and historic centers and hubs
  • special stops for exploration
  • food, art, music and dance


Full Itinerary

Friday, June 5th

6 am - Depart for Chicago via Amtrak. Meet at the Amtrack train station.

10:30 - 12pm - Tour and learning experience with leaders of Build Chicago, a nationally respected gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organization on Chicago’s West Side. Topic areas include youth activism, violence disruption, gentrification, gang intervention, trauma informed care.

12:30 - 1:30pm - Visit with Division Street Business Development Association, a center of support and growth for local businesses, and tour Humboldt Park’s Paseo Boricua. Topic areas include resident activism and resistance, housing, people first economics and gentrification.

Lunch at Nellie’s Restaurant, a family-owned Puerto Rican eatery

3:30 - 6:30pm - Check-in at the Residence Inn Chicago Downtown and explore the Magnificent Mile on your own

7 - 11:00pm - Dinner and hanging out at the Wild Hare, Reggae Capital USA, in Lincoln Park

11:30 pm - Arrive back at the hotel


Saturday, June 6th

Slow start - Sleep in, enjoy continental breakfast in the hotel and/or explore

12:30 p.m - Participate in a 1-hour Afro-Boricua Bomba Class at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in Humboldt Park.

2:15 - 4:15pm - Lunch and shopping on your own in the historical Hyde Park. This neighborhood is compact, walkable and remarkably diverse in its people, architecture, restaurants and cultural amenities.

Lots of things to do like art, the, a variety of Black-owned restaurants (including BBQ, vegan, and soul food), boutiques, bookstores, lots of shopping and a brew fest that weekend.

6:30 - 11:30pm - Travel back to Grand Rapids to the Amtrak train station

Is there a cost to the trip? Yes, the cost of the Refuel Roadtrip is a deal at $175 per person. Thanks to a generous donation from Steelcase, participants are being asked to cover only about one-third of the full cost of the trip.


What's all included in the fee?
Round trip transportation, hotel accommodations, four meals, a POC-owned space and specially curated experiences.

Is there a payment plan?
Yes! A non-refundable deposit of $90 is due by January 31st. Once the deposit it paid, you'll receive an email with a payment link in early February and have until March 20th to submit the remaining balance of $85.

Who is this trip designed for? Black and Brown leaders of all ages and stages. The trip intentionally includes learning from leaders in community and business. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to connect with others.

How are meals and drinks handled? Four meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Friday and breakfast on Sunday) are provided. Additional food and alcoholic beverages are not provided.
